Lo cotidiano de El cuento de todos los días, con las anécdotas de hoy, las historias del pasado y las fantasías de un tiempo vivido en los sueños, suman un retrato de familia normal, en la cual los lazos del afecto salvan a los personajes de un mundo hostil. En esta novela no hay comas etílicos o drogas a los trece años, ni sexo por adelantado, ni conflictos generacionales insalvables, ni siquiera magias. El asombro le llega al lector desde lo real que puede esperarse de una familia tradicional: lo que pasa en el instituto de Charo, en la enciclopedia de don Anselmo, en la memoria animal del gato Patata.
Tras la aparente facilidad de la lectura, se esconde una estructura cuidada y una variedad de voces muy rica en los diferentes narradores que van tomando la palabra.
