En esta novela no hay comas etílicos o drogas a los trece años, ni sexo por adelantado, ni conflictos generacionales insalvables, ni siquiera magias. El asombro le llega al lector desde lo real que puede esperarse de una familia tradicional: lo que pasa en el instituto de Charo, en la enciclopedia de don Anselmo, en la memoria animal del gato Patata.
